Glamorous Life of a Mom

This morning I had to call the credit card company that I use at work to process credit cards. They open the phones at 7am so I thought it would be a wise idea to call while the kids ate their breakfast.  Bad plan.  I no more than began explaining to the representative the reason for my call when Toby starts wailing in the background.  No problem, I picked him up and bounced him in one arm while I held the phone with the other.  Than Eli spilt his apple juice.  "Uh Oh Mama!  Uh Oh Mama! Duice!"  he repeated over & over.  I laid down Toby (who started to cry again) & soaked up the juice.  Breena decided she needed to go potty & it appeared to be an emergency.  I ushered her into the bathroom.  By the time i got back into the kitchen Eli had decided to plop his bowl of vanilla yogurt on top of his head.  "I sealy Mama" he laughed.  Thankfully, the yogurt was gone.  Toby was still crying in his bouncy chair & I was still trying to talk to the credit card lady.  I started cleaning Eli off when I hear Breena yell from the bathroom "Mom! Come wipe my butt!".  I ignored her.  She started yelling louder & louder & louder!  I walked to the bathroom & mouthed "Sh! I am on the phone. Wipe your own bottom!".  I started to walk away & she screamed at the top of her lungs "But MOM! I need YOU to WIPE MY BUTT!".  Toby was crying.  Eli was crawling on top of the table eating the leftover breakfast bar crumbs.  It was then that I heard the women on the other end of the phone laughing.  She said to me, "someone doesn't sound very happy this morning!".  My life is so glamorous these days! ;)

Toby's Birth

I woke up at about 4am on the day Toby was born.  We needed to leave for the hospital shortly before 6am.  I had some time to kill!  I took a nice hot bath & even decided to put on makeup & curl my hair.  Hey, I was about to meet my son!  I had to look somewhat decent!  I woke Dave up around 5:15am so he had time to shower.  Dave's parents arrived around 5:50am to watch the kids and after one last preggo picture we headed out the door.  We checked into the hospital & I was taken back to the room to get changed.  There were three nurses/aids working with us that morning.  They were all so nice!  I think it makes the experience much more pleasurable when the nurses are great.  They started an IV of fluids.  I felt myself getting light-headed but tried to ignore the feeling.  It didn't work.  Whatever they had given me made me sick.  After a few minutes with a cold cloth on my head & a puke bag in hand I felt better.  They offered to give me an anti-nausea medication.  I accepted & it was inserted into my IV.  Uh oh...sick again!  This was not a good start!  With my previous c-sections I wasn't nauseous until I was on the operating table- and even then it lasted only minutes.  It crossed my mind more than once to run out of the hospital & opt to come back a different day!  But it was too late- I was already in my gown & hooked up to machines.  Fortunately the second round of sickness was short lived & I was praying it wouldn't happen again.  About a hour after arriving at the hospital it was time to head back to the OR.  Dave (who had already changed into scrubs) walked beside my back as I was wheeled back.  He had to wait outside the OR doors while my spinal block was placed.  For me, this is by far the scariest part or the whole ordeal.  It is scary to have a needle in your back.  And it is painful.  Once the medication was in place I could instantly feel my legs tingle & go numb.  And I was horribly nauseous once again.  The anesthiolosist kept inserting medication into my IV trying to combat the nausea.  After several doses it was finally kicking in.  Dave was brough in and sat by my side.  I remember holding his hand tightly.  A c-section isn't painful.  But it is the weirdest feeling.  I could feel no pain but could feel tugging, pulling & pressure.  My doctor then said, " you're going to feel a lot of pressure".  I knew that ment Toby would soon be here.  And then there he was.  Hearing him cry was a relief.  They held him up over the drape that covered my face.  He was SO tiny & very purple.  I felt a hot lump in my throat but the tears wouldn't fall.  It's as if I was too happy, too grateful, & too blessed to waste time tearing up.  I could tell his crying was labored, it sounded like he was struggling a little bit.  Dave went over to the warmer to get a good look at our little boy.  The nurses were gushing over him.  They kept saying "he is so cute!" and "what beautiful red hair" and "I love the name Toby!  How unique".  Toby needed a little bit of oxygen to help get his lungs working.  Other than that he was perfect & healthy!  Toby & Dave headed to the nursery where they measured him & gave him a bath.  I was taken to a recovery room where I waited forever to hold my sweet baby.  Finally Dave brought me our son.  He was beautiful.  His eyes were open & his hair had a tint of red.  Holding him in my arms felt so natural- as if he'd always been a part of our family.  A few hours later we were able to introduce Toby to his siblings who absolutely adore him.  What an amazing moment it was to have my forever family together for the very first time.  We have been so blessed.  I often sit in awe at how lucky Dave & I are to have this life together with our three precious children.  Toby completes us &  we love him so  so much.

ROAR!

I went to get Eli out of his crib this morning.  As soon as I walked in his room I was pelted my his stuffed lion and Eli yelling "ROAR!".  I asked him if he was being a lion.  His response? "Yeah, I silly!"

"THAT" Mom

I've decided that I am now officially "THAT" Mom.  You know what I'm talking about.  The mom who walks around the store with a frazzled look on her face; The one with more kids than hands; The one who seems to not even notice that her son has taken off both his shoes in the cart- yep that's me.  I know I look like a mess when I take all three kids shopping by myself, but I assure you I (usually) have it under control.  I've learned what store I can & cannot attempt by myself.  For instance, I rarely take all 3 to the beauty supply store because 1) the carts are too small for Toby's carseat & there is no strap on the seat so Eli crawls out 2)Breena (who is typically a great shopper) suddenly gets sticky fingers and insists on picking up every hairspray she can reach!  I also avoid stores that don't have automatic doors (like the dollar store).  But sometimes I have no choice but to shop by alone.  It just hit me a few weeks ago that I came to the realization that I am now THAT mom.  Here's what happened...

It was Breena's birthday.  We had just come home from our fun morning together to find a package on our doorstep!  It was a birthday present Breena's uncle had shipped all the way from Fargo!  She excitedly ripped off the paper to discover a Gone Fishin game!  Of course she wanted to play it immediately.  But it was naptime so I promised her as soon as she woke from her nap we'd play her new game.  I failed to check to see if the new game needed batteries.  It did.  A "c" battery.  Perhaps the only size we don't have laying around the house!  When Bree woke up from her nap she went right to her new game & waited for me to come play.  I did not want to haul 3 kids to CVS just to get batteries so I told her that daddy would stop on his way home from work to buy batteries.  We would have to wait to play until then.  Her eyes looked so sad & her little lips started to frown.  In the sweetest voice she said, "please can we go buy batteries? I like my new game".  It was her birthday & I just couldn't let her down.  And so I agreed to run to the store.  It takes me a good 20 minutes to change diapers, tell Bree to go potty, get shoes & coats on the kids; get Toby in his carseat; put on my shoes & coat; & put Eli's shoe's BACK on because he always takes them back off.  Finally, we were out the door & headed to the store.  Eli cannot be trusted yet in a parking lot.  He refuses to hold hands & darts off.  So I have to carry Eli in one arm and Toby's carseat in the other.  We walked into CVS & I set Toby down to get a cart.  The cart was stuck.  I decided it wasn't worth the effort to try to free the cart so I continued to carry one boy in each arm thru the store.  Luckily for me, batteries are located right up front.  We walked over & I began looking for the "C" batteries.  At this point Eli is extremely annoyed that I won't set him down & he's throwing his head back in an effort to free himself.  Toby is starting to fuss in his carseat because I didn't feed him before we left.  I pointed with my foot to the batteries we needed & Breena grabbed them.  We went to wait in line at the checkout.  The person in front of us was signing up for a rewards card.  I swear they took fifteen minutes to fill out the application.  We waited & waited.  Breena had gotten bored and started reorganizing the candy bars, Eli was screaming "down mama!", and Toby was in a full on cry at this point.  I kept my cool and let my boys throw their fits.  Finally it was our turn to check out.  The lady asked me if I'd be interested in signing up for a card.  Um, yes I would LOVE to sign up right now because clearly I do not have my hands full!  Just ring up my batteries & let me leave!  We paid & hurried back to the car.  Once I had everyone strapped into their seats I was able to let out a refreshing *sigh*.  We made through a another store trip!  Sucess!

"There were 3 in the Bed..."

I miss it here.  I have very little time without someone needing me.  And the time I do have I spend doing things that need to get done.  Which leaves very little time to blog & share stories.  I have several stories I'd like to share.  We've had some fun these past eight weeks!  I keep reminding myself that someday I won't be a walking zombie- Toby will eventually learn to sleep!  I have a good story about a cranky goose chasing Breena that I'd like to write here and I'd also love to get Toby's birth story written out.  But not tonight.  It is 9:15pm & I still need to do up the dishes, get the toys (that are soaking in cleaner) out of the bathtub, and fold a load of laundry before I can head to bed.  How is it that adding ONE child ends up being DOUBLE the amount of laundry!?! I'm not complaining.  I love my new life.  But it is busy & chaotic!   I will get back to blogging.  I promise.

All About Tobias

Toby will be 8 weeks old on Monday!  His personality is starting to shine.  Toby LOVES attention & hates being ignored.  He starts to grunt in his bouncy chair as soon as he notices no one is playing with him!  He has a love/hate relationship with his pacifier.  He continues to be a good eater & still insists on nursing during the night.  He likes his swing, but always prefers to be held.  His smile melts my heart.  He is trying hard to giggle but it comes out as a coo & squeal.  His most alert time during the day is early afternoon.  He hates sleeping in his bassinet (in fact I've gotten rid of it!).  Most nights he sleeps with me.  He's taken a few head butts from his big brother already.  He hates having a wet diaper.  He loves a warm bath.  Toby fits in with our family perfectly.  We love our new baby boy!
